Jessica's Table

The task - to renovate this -

imposing 12 seater Rustic Dining Table.

A South African hardwood top on stainless steel frame legs.

Approximately 10 ft x 4 ft x 3 inches thick.

I was tasked to make the top flat and usable.

The timber resembles European Walnut but is 50% denser.

It has great character enhanced by its waney edges, spalting and historic infestation in the sapwood.

Since its commission in Cape Town it has been transported to the UK an has resided in a modern home for 3 years.

The timber has moved somewhat with twisting and warping resulting in an undulating top, open joints and large splits.

It was made with 3 asymmetrical boards one of which, about 575 mm wide had a corner 45 mm higher that the other 3.

The top weighed 600 lbs (270kgs) before work commenced and I removed 100lbs (45kgs) of sawdust.

Summary.

I had reservations with the merits of this project, however the end result has been well worth the effort involved.

I am grateful for the opportunity given me by the owner.

My difficulties and learning curve only add to the owners previously encountered trials and tribulation to achieve this stunning table.
